Why not?!
If people believe a rumor, then you have changed what they believe is the truth. It's a powerful tool for a myriad motives.
However the motives for spreading false rumors can be (and often are) as petty as boredom!
It's not that I don't want to believe it, I just don't see:
1) any primary sources.
2) anyone with access to primary sources willing to verify the claim
independently.
3) any non-private organisations or governments willing to verify the claim
independently.
When I see at least 2 of these I will take the story more seriously.
