I firmly believe that all taxes are evil. On the other hand I fully understand the need: no taxes, no roads. No taxes, no police or fire departments. The argument is always where to draw the line.

I even agree with a lot of social taxes, but I prefer them to stay on the state or local level; I believe the job of the Federal Government is to represent the people in dealings with foreign nations and arbitrate in disputes between the states.

Of course there are those who feel otherwise, and as was shown at the 1787 Constitutional Convention by Benjamin Franklin, nothing ever gets done without some compromise.

My bottom line is this: I firmly believe that congresses, legislatures and parliaments on the whole do what they think is best, and that includes levying taxes and spending the money raised where they see fit. I just feel that a lot of them think that raising taxes is the best, and sometimes only, solution. I'd be a lot more comfortable if they would take my attitude, that all taxes are evil, and what must be considered in every case is whether the good accomplished is worth the evil done to the taxpayer.
