They aren't sitting in front of a monitor
I'd suggest to adjust the gamma setting of
your monitor or/and your graphics card. ATI cards for example have a tool to
load a profile for a game for this purpose. Depending on your monitor
black
can be black or some more grey, depending on type (crt/tft) or brand.
