Historically many Sub Skippers did their best to get ahold of MK10's early in the war - often to no avail.
The Naval Weapons Command insisted for the longest time that there was nothing wrong with the MK14. But that didn't keepTorpedomen from often disabling the magnetic exploder device after leaving port. I've read that in some cases they even rebuilt the contact exploders underway to beef them up and make them more reliable.
It was a patrol by Mush Morton, I believe, that finally convinced the Weapons guys that maybe the Mk14 was hosed.
