It depends on where you want to live, really. If anything, all you'll need for personal protection is a .38/.357 caliber revolver, or if you fancy modern firearms, a Glock. Now if money isn't an object

, go with either an .45 caliber H&K USP, or a Desert Baby Eagle, preferable .357 caliber. If you are not a gun nut, but still think you need one, consider the first two choices.
As for you kids safety, assuming they aren't lectured every day by you from day one about gun safety, you can either buy a gun safe, a child-proof trigger safety, or if you are very concerened about safety, both. But if you do get both, you loose the home-defence usage.
