I could be wrong, but I think that running your radar increases the chances of air attack. Even early in the war, they could home in on radio and radar transmissions. If one aircraft locates you, he would most certainly tell his buddies. Try making a drastic course change after the aircraft is out of sight, and run in that direction for a couple hours. This might throw the other aircraft off. I think the message about being out of o2 is a bug. I have gotten it several times right after surfacing, even if I have not been down that long.
