Only chance to hear them better is to turn your "ear" to them. When you will try to hear something standing in front of the sound source you won't hear a thing.

I do have a 5.1 system, but I'm using 5.1 headphones. Things might've gotten porqued with the latest driver install so I'll do some checking when I get home and report back.
