I got this feeling: when you set the distance with the steadimeter i think you also choose the azimuth (direction) of the target. If you set the distance without using "L" to lock the target but you do it manually aiming to the bow or stern of the target, maybe it calculates a different course. Very difficult indeed anyway... better to tweak different speeds of target as you suggested. Anyway i'll make a try.
