I don't think there is any trick but it sure seems a bit easier with calmer seas.
Check your fish running depth and make a mental note of different keel depths of various ships. In WAC there's tons & tons of different ships so that never gets old.
I may be guessing but are you trying to do this consistantly with 1 torpedo?
