There were five S classes.

S 1 length 219 feet 25 in class

S 2 length 207 feet 1 in class (Lake)

S 3 lenght 231 feet 15 in class (Government)

S 42 length 225 feet 6 in class

S 48 length 240 feet 4 in class (only S boats constructed with a rear tube)

of those five classes, only two classes made Pacific war patrols.

S 1 class

S 42 class

The only S class to be sunk by enemy fire was a gun battle between the S-44 (S-42 class)and and an IJN destroyer. The S-44 mistook the destroyer for a small merchant and opened fire at close range.

Five other S boats were lost in the war. All were the S 1 class. Of these five, 3 ran aground (no depth meter?), one collided with her own escort and sank and the last in training accident off Hawaii.

The last S 42 class boat to be commisioned was the S 47 in 1925.

THe last S 1 class boat to be commisioned was the S 41 in 1924.

No S boats were lost due to IJN ASW.
