I don't even start a career/1st patrol until I have mastered the fundimentals via the tutorials and single missions.
Then I will start a campaign close to 100% realism - everything on real except I always keep externals on as I didn't spend hundreds of $$ on a high end system just to look at the chart and Bernard the whole patrol.
