Drop one (I sometimes use two) about 50m to 75m as you dive even deeper. Hopefully the DDs coming after you will hear the noise made by the decoy and let you melt away, twisting and turning in the depths.
They don't always fool the DDs. But when they work it's awesome. I attacked a heavily escorted convoy once and dropped two after firing all my torps. As I snuck away I came back up for a peek through my periscope. Six DDs were sitting in a circle around the decoys, taking turns dropping depth charges. Then they called in the planes and they pounded the sea water into froth.
