I'm not real sure what you meant by that(i'm sure i'm misunderstanding) but I know I submerge pretty quickly after being spotted on the surface! if they are a good ways off I might, punch it, put them at my 180, then get up to full speed(turning causes a little loss in speed), and then submerge. But I certainly submerge.

Oops, I meant I go under to periscope depth long before I'm spotted.
I tried something different, I dismissed all of my lower ranked petty officers and crewmen and spent renown on a better set. I still have a good 6 or 10 crewmen that are at the 1 stripe level but all my petty officers are 2 dots or better now. I met a convoy in AL67 area and did my usual setup. Coming into the convoy from about 30 degrees off their bow. They had a destroyer in front and smaller escorts on the sides and something in the rear. Light fog was in effect as usual so I was watching with my binoculars manually to see the ships in time. With decks awash I saw the lead destroyer at 7km away (normal crew eyes wouldnt say anything till 4.3 or so, stupid fog). So I ducked under the waves, silent engaged, and went ahead at 2knots. Once I was inside the escort I turned around to make my ship going ahead part of the convoy only much slower so they could overtake me and I could fire my torps. Things went as normal at this point, I looked around with my scope and picked out some big ones and fired. This time though after the torps went off the escorts didnt know where to go and the one nearest to me kept it original course!
I dont know if it was the crew or like you said I was running into very good escorts. I'll find out in my next few encounters if the escorts find me like a neon sign in the night or if they're guessing as to where I went.
