Well I do much the same as you. I max at 128x for transit (unless in a likely aircraft area in which case I max at 64x) and use less for searching within my chosen target area.
I often set the sim running and do other things - I get alerted by the crew shouting something! I imagine that's what the "hard core 1x" players do.
