To me, it's all about the immersion. (pun) I hope we can tune in Tokyo Rose! And news broadcasts? In the first Gulf war, listening to the BBC News on short wave radio was one of the major activities in down time. There was no email, sat phones, etc... Mail was from 2 months ago, the radio was your only source of up to date news. Same in WWII. Soldiers and sailors who are bored, far from home maybe for the first time, and isolated on a small vessel for a long time would give their right arm for news from the outside world. And music? Gotta have some period music - Glenn Miller, Big Band stuff, etc... And I hope that we will receive patrol orders from time to time for special missions, change of plans, etc... over the radio. And we should be on radio silence sometimes too. Transmitting when you're not supposed to should be penalized by lots of ASW ships and aircraft showing up and kicking your butt, or a nasty letter/radio transmission from your CO/ loss of renown, whatever. Should result in damage to your reputation/career if you're lucky, damage to your boat if you're not.
