A very large tanker in WW2 was about 15,000 gross registered tons. Most were around 8,000 tons. The
Exxon Valdez was 110,831 grt. The really big supertankers are up to 240,000 tons displacement. You'd have to sink a lot of full-up tankers (not sailing in ballast) in WW2 to create the devastation of one supertanker sinking today. I'm not saying it didn't have an impact, but the effects were'nt nearly as concentrated as they would be in the postwar future.
