Exactly, and - in my estimation - the VII was a failure where it counted = results. The VII failed in its mission - sure there were some mitigating circumstances (Hitler and the SHTUPIDITY of taking on TWO major naval powers). But the fact remains that the German U-boat campaign failed and the US Fleet boat campaign (w/ the Gato as the backbone) succeeded.
Sure more Typ VIIs were built than any other sub type in history - and more were sunk too - many more!
