Last night I was on my way home from my assigned grid (CG85), 6th patrol, type IXB boat. Somewhere west of portugal, I got contact report on hydropohone. I set an intercepting course, and went to persicope depth.
Then I spotted two ships, one armed trawler followed by a small merchant. Both ships had French flag. I set my torp to impact, 4 meter deep, target the small merchant and fire. Only took one torp to sink it. But after it sank, the mark on the map was green! It was a neutral ship!
What the heck? I checked the flag list and it said that French was neutral from June 26 1940. I checked my calender, whoa, it was June 26!!
I was one day late, and it cost me some renown.
