Under the careless watch Britain's elite, the Industrial Revolution got off to a horrible start, the consequences of which have continued to ring down through the centuries. The melting of the polar icecaps, the loss of countless plants and animal species, and the imperiled condition of the human race on a planet made poisonous by misapplied technology are all a consequence of British negligence and hunger to accumulate wealth at any cost.

Bollocks. Was there some set of regulations tacked up somewhere in 1780 on how to properly conduct an industrial revolution? People always want to judge the past by todays high standards. Unfortunately evolution is painfully and messy. Nobody even knew they were going through an industrial revolution back then or called it that until it was half over...and industralization wasn't any prettier in France or Prussia or the USA. As for the colonizing the less-developed world somebody was going do it. Spain and Portugal were the ones who started the ball rolling. Certainly Russia didn't end up sprawling across the northern half of Asia because the natives there loved the taste of vodka.
