Everyone keeps saying that the U-boats are small, they aren't small, they are
smaller than a ship, we're talking of a rectangle of about 1 meter high with a 4 meters tower protruding from the middle and 70+ meters in the case of the IXC...
Sure they were harder to spot than a ship, but they weren't invisible, add to that the wake produced by it to keep pace with the convoy and you increase the chance to be spotted.
Here in Mar del Plata is based the submarine force of my country, In the 70s/80s we still had a couple of operational Balao class subs, and I remember spotting them leaving port on a clear day and calm sea from a distance of at least 3 km with my naked eyes, they are larger than the german subs, but not that much.
