Aside from being an author of various books about the U-boat war („Das Boot“, „Die Festung“ etc.), Mr. Buchheim was a highly respected collector of modern art. Having been a painter by himself, he started to collect art close after the war and by the time managed to get a collection of very famous modern artists. His collection was taxed at around $ 300 mn and he finally established his own “Museum of Fantasy” to show his collection along with his own paintings he made during WW II as a u-boat reporter. You can visit his museum in Bernried (southern Bavaria): http://www.buchheimmuseum.de/
In fact Mr. Buchheim’s death found much echo in German papers, mainly due to his excellent work as a collectior of modern art.
RIP Mr. Buchheim.
