I have a copy of Orville Wright's memoirs. In it he talks about the first 1903 flight:
"If someone today asked me to climb into a strange machine, one that had never been flown at all, and attempt to take off into a 35-miles-per-hour-wind, I would say that he was crazy. At the time, we thought we knew what we were doing."
