That little trick did the job.
I like to aim straight at the attacking Ships while they are headed straight for me. While I am firing my main gun at them, I launch a torp at them. Seems to work. Most of the time I just get minor damage due to the distance from them.
Risky, I know but it works if 1 on 1.
