Actually the Type IX is no roomier inside than a Type VII - its size doesn't really mean it's any 'roomier'; that extra space is not 'comfort zones' but larger engines, batteries, torpedo tubes and other combat-related stuff - and fuel tanks of course. There's barely a few more bunks on it for the slightly-larger crew, even.
The IX might seem like a cow, but for a sub its size there's been no concessions to performance designed into it compared to the VII. Though it did ultimately have a different role, it was still built around the same aggressive U-boat design philosophy - performance over everything else.
