Your 'noise detector' is not 100% accurate in determining whether or not you have been detected  It is only a helpful indicator to tell you that your emitting a level of noise that may be detectable to others.  |
Yes, but I think his point is that it turned red as soon as he echoed for depth. Plus he says the destroyer went straight for him, which means that echoing seems to have a clear relation with an increase probability of detection.
