For Windows XP:
- Control Panel
- Performance and Maintenance
- System (click this and a new window will appear).
Then, on the "System Properties" window, choose the "Advanced" tab, on that tab go in the settings for the "Performance" settings.
Another new window ("Performance Options") appears. Again, on this window, choose the "Advanced" tab. At the bottom, there's a button to change the virtual memory settings. You get another new window ("Virtual Memory").
In this new window, there is a list of all drives in your system, and the size of the page file on each drive. For each drive, select "no paging file". Apply changes and restart.
Note that it is not recommended to configure the PC like this, but with the amount of RAM you have, it should be reasonably safe. If you have to run programs that need lots of memory, go back to that window and turn the paging file back on. Some background information is in that link I gave earlier.
