why "debatable" for number 3? I was under the impression that while a straight downwards sonar ping has limited detection range , if you are in the immediate vicinity (say 2km) of a warship and try to find depth under keel you are broadcasting a loud "more Wasserbomben please"
Could you please expand on this?
