About 20 years ago now, in a small town on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley called Magna, two slightly drunk friends got into an argument. Rather than trade blows, one of them went outside of the bar and unhitched his friend's horse (yes, some parts around here still have hitching posts at the bars...and the McDonalds's), and tried to sell it to a woman walking down the street. The drunk owner of the horse called the police and insisted on pressing charges. He dropped the charges when he sobered up, but a local assistant District Attorney stayed up all night looking through law books, until he finally charged the offender with "Attempting to sell an item that didn't belong to him". You see, "Horse Theft" was still a hanging offence in Utah at that time, and the poor ADA didn't want to take the chance that someone might push for the ultimate punishment.
