I decided to try what you suggested and dove deep (255) with a slow screw. As soon as I was out of the protection of the limp duck cruiser the DDs started dropping on me again. I pointed the boat NE - E and at slow bell, rigged for silent running I waited it out. many cans were dropped but had none come near me. In about 30 minutes with the DD/DEs zooming around dropping cans every now and then they stopped. I ended the mission with a success.
I'm wondering if I waited an hour and then came back up if the DD/DEs would have left the limp duck cruiser there and I could have finnished her off. Oh well, on the the next mission to get ready to make a career out this.
