Thanks folks, I used an a4 size photo from a book and scaled it up without any gridding etc {final size is about 30" x 25" approx}, just by eye.
Blending stumps and torllions are the tools of the trade for me
...with the card its harder to get a smooth blend, but the surface doesn't wear or smudge as easy and it leaves a more realistic look once completed .
