I know it says in the GWX manual that you can move undetected at flank just after a DC explosion due to the disturbance in the water caused by the explosion however I think this is imperfectly modelled in the game. When I first got GWX I did this and I found it very difficult to evade the enemy.
Now I never go flank when the enemy is near me. I go as deep as possible (200m+) and run silently at 2knts. Slow but much more effective.
