Chances are that if you have a good High definition LCD monitor and a good video card, then the night time will be just fine. (yes, dark like dark is in real life).
Even with my good hardware, I still need to turn off the lights when there is little to no moon. It helps a lot.

also minimise the menu bar (numpad del (.)) you'll be surprised how much light is given of by those dials.
