Today I foolishly launched a torpedo without checking the type and too late realized it had a homing mechanism on board. It turned about and slammed right into my after section

... Doing less than 30% damage to my boat. In fact, even though it virtually physically hit one of the propellers, it did not destroy either of them, nor the torpedo tube or rudder.
Is this a game-play mechanism, or is it unintended? It seems exceedingly odd to me that a torpedo that cripples/sinks a destroyer only lightly damages a submarine.
