At any rate, use of the gun while decks were awash was a dangerous proposition. Primarily for the men manning the gun.
So only the ready use would be flooded at decks awash? And as for the chute being in the conning tower, wouldn't it open to a door at deck level? I'm sure they didn't pass it down from the bridge.

Now I'm less arguing and more confused.
The ammo chute (when present) was not at deck level... it was (IIRC) roughly shoulder height up on the con. Rounds were passed partway up the con. (exactly how far I don't recall... to wherever the cute feed was.)

Also, if manning the gun when decks awash... it would stand to reason that they may not bother with the ready ammo stash.

Another detail... (please use as desired LOL) IIRC the the rounds wherever they were stored... were stored in waxed tubes to repel seawater. (of course this does not guarantee eventual contamination)
