Correct. Going to resupply no matter how you do it, is like docking at port, except when you resupply out to sea, you need to be closer.
25k for ports and I think someone said within 5k for Milk Cows. So when you get close enough, hit escape and if you are given the option to dock at that particular location, you're good to go.
If you just click "Return to Port" you will go back to port of departure no matter where you are, but you lose gained renown.
