I know Fernie has the better pow and it's more of a "locals place," while Banff is more commercial, touristy, etc. The only problem is that Fernie is a 4 hour drive from Calgary and Banff is MUCH closer! So, if you were from NYC and you had a 5 day holiday, would you sacrifice two days of skiing for travel, but end up with three days of GREAT skiing? Or would you rather have the 2 extra days and go to Banff?

Also, I'm assuming Fernie has more extreme/death-defying (good) terrain. Is this true?
Yes, Yes, Yes... There is awesome backcountry. If I recall correctly, Fernie is more like 3 hours, but it's a beautiful drive. Banff is good, but as you said, super commercialized (and expensive). Fernie is still fairly unknown, but it's got everything going for it. Trust me, go to Fernie, you won't regret it.

Also, if you like powder, look into going CAT skiing. It's expensive, but worth it 300%.

YESSS another skier (or should I say, "snow sport enthusiast," seeing as you ride on one plank) on Subsim! I never thought I'd see another one of our kind on here... Then again SUBSIM.com is not the place for that anyway .

Backcountry is my thing, but I don't own a beacon or a probe; only a shovel. Also, having never been to Fernie OR Banff, and going with my mom (I'm 15), the chances of me getting under the rope are slim. This trip would be strictly an inbounds thing. And I REALLY want to go to Fernie, but I don't want to lose 2 days of skiing, so we'll see. Also, I was looking at the Big Sky trail map on the website, and my jaw literally fell to the floor. I'll have to tell my parents about that . Colorado is another possibility. In the end, though, it's up to the 'rents.

So you board? When you go backcountry do you use teles, AT, or splitboard? I can get by on Teles, but I'm much more comfortable with a fixed heel. Have you ever done much backcountry in CO? I'm a big fan of the 10th Mountain Division huts... great stuff to be found in the Vail Pass/Copper area. I just wish we had more coverage here on the right coast! Global warming sucks.
Okay Guys. I love the Island because of the fishing (when I was younger and able to get around) so I've been to several places on the Island, but that's it. Now I'm stuck in Port Hardy. At the present, the Island is getting pounded by high winds and snow. I'm even getting snow in Port Hardy and that's unheard of. But being oiginally from Ontario, I love the fifteen inches of snow.

Sounds like global warming to me!!! Any warmer and you could get 20 inches of snow. Whats your take?
