agred with was has been said: if you use stock version you can sink almost anything with the deck gun (i have sunk tankers, c2, c3 and of course small merchants). you can sink quite a few until you run out of ammo. aim for waterline (so that it hits the ship and splashes). a trick i use is to have your watch officer tell you the range and then aim a bit SHORTER of that. my experience is that if you let the computer shoot for you, they wil aim for the "body" of the ship and it will generally take longer.
btw does anyone know if the arour-piercing or the highly explosive shells are especially good at sinking any kind of ships?? is there any strategy to be used?? ie. first armour piercing to open a hole, then highly explosives...??? or is armour piercing always best?
