And it's possible to sink armed merchants with a deck gun. I did it the other night. It was fall of '41, and I took out the engines of a C3 cargo. While it was dead in the water, I maneuvered submerged so I was directly astern of it and surfaced. It only had a gun on its bow and it couldn't bring it to bear on me. I fired away at my leisure.
