In a play test of my multiplay map, I was driving the akula and was tasked to intercept a 688 with FFG escort departing from a sub pen or shipyard located within 30nm between long / lat points. Current state of ROE is weapons free for RU and weapons hold for US forces.

EMCON was secure and wasn't picking up anything except for the helo flying CAP for escort on esm and dipping sonar. Dipping sonar was farther from me than my kilo counterpart, so I made use of that. Coming from the west I set a search pattern of 10 x 30nm and figured I’d gun it east for a bit then slow down on the 1st leg due east, make the turn and patrol due north along the coastline.

I preset 2 fish for HF, 1 to enable at 1000 the other 2500 in a 10 degree spread since I'm blind so to speak and warm up the asw torpedo tubes for strike. Witnesseda couple of 60 hz contacts come and go passing stern side, even some bios. Also had a fishing boat starboard side I could have used for camo, but I maintained the tactical advantage at a lower level sea floor than where the fisherman was.

At that very moment I confirmed true bearings on everything I was picking up and most of the traffic was either westerly, or from the east due west, so any additional 60 hz contact from the east will definitely deserve my immediate attention.

While on 2nd leg patrol I toggle back and forth between HF, Sphere and TA - nothing. Then all of a sudden guess who is doing 8 kts, and getting good pick up on the TA - he is close.

I tried for TMA plot and master but the sphere wouldn't lock - im running out of time, and with his signal strength he was close. I then call a hard right rudder for a brief moment to prevent overshooting, aiming directly at him, cut speed to 2kts, reel in the TA - and wait.

As soon as HF contact was made confirmed by sphere I launch CMs 1st, fire spread and flank to his port side as his torp takes the CMs just in the nick of time - lucky break . I then call a depth and course change order to prevent running around and head east behind the wake of his torpedo and listen. The 1st torp he evaded early, the 2nd torp he managed to buy himself some time and evade as well, but he is going loud enough to plot a master at this range.

Plotted master and fired a bracket shot of asw torps that eventually caught up with him. I fired a nice sortie as an insurance policy to give the FFG something to chew on. 3/4 of them made it passed the FFG. Next thing ya know, acoustics report explosion on bearing of master.

Moments later I was tasked to disengage and reach safe distance as the helo caught wind and the dipping sonar growing louder.

I also have another story as the 688 if you wish to hear that one as well
