The point is to clean up the drive and give buggy finnicky windows a clean surface on which to dance. After much use the information on a hard drive becomes fragmented, often to the point of causing severe slow downs. Besides sometimes you get a trojan you just can't get rid of or your copy of windows gets so corrupted that you need to completely reinstall and its always much better to install on a clean partition than over another windows install.
A clean format makes your computer run better. MUCH better. You just gotta back your stuff up. I am fortunate enogh to have two HDs so that when I want to format one I can back up into the other.
