I did find myself cheating when I couldn't get a lock because of range, buy re-locking until I forced it to give me a reading: "Yep-medium tanker, range 18,243". I try not to do that anymore. Also, since the WO is almost infallible, I don't lock because that does make it a little bit harder. If he wasn't quite so perfect I wouldn't mind as much.

I normally don't lock until I have a clear sight picture of the ship (normally 4-5km or closer). I really don't want or desire info from doing that unless and until I specifically request that from my WO (who, and I agree here, could be less than perfect in his assessments and measurements). All I really want from the lock is just that: a lock. Something that leaves my hands free to do other things and not loose the sight picture. And again, I don't feel that's unreasonable to want, as I'm effectively one person trying to do multiple persons' tasks.
