The stories a true one...it was in the days of sail (napoleonic era I think). A French ship ran aground on coastal rocks and a monkey dressed in a French naval uniform was washed ashore amongst the debris (apparently it was popular in those days for skippers to have them as pets).
The locals realising the uniform was that of an enemy thought it must be a spy so they hung the poor little bugger ...And that my friend is a true story and not a 'wind up'
