Then again, maybe I'm just dreaming.

You're definitly not dreaming... I remember when I once tried over half an hour in real time to get that bloody boat out of the mud in AOD
But hitting the bottom is not the end... last time I played SH3 I got assigned to grid AF16 just outside Scapa Flow in mid 1940, just as I passed the eastern grid border, I ordered to dive to periscope depth and soon after hit a mine... the fuel tanks were destroyed, periscopes, hydrophones, radio, forward batteries and much more, I had heavy flooding and sank quickly to the bottom.... I managed to repair all damage that could still be repaired, but since the stern batteries were also damaged, they were completly discharged, without any diesel left, all I could do was surface and press Esc to return to base (How realistic, without any source of power... maybe they turned the driveshafts with their bare hands?). Last time I hit a mine it was at least over immediatly.

Hmm..yes..that Escape function...it is highly unrealistic...I managed to reach home too with my fuel tanks empty. Luckily AOD was less forgiving in the name of realism.
Go AOD !
