Hey guys, just to finish out this thread, turns out it was a bad memory stick, got it replaced, and everything is ok. Except that the original reason that the game was crashing before the upgrades is still there.
I think at this point it must be a corrupt file. The crashes occurred under TW 2.0, so since a new one has come out, I'll be trying that instead, and see if it works better.
