Before you head out on patrol click on the "Change Realism" (found in the briefing of your patrol orders window) and uncheck "No map contact update"

I dont think this gives you the blue/green option of ships but will show ship contacts on the map. Not quite sure using GW, as i have this option checked.

The stock game shows everything when unchecked.
