To expand on that point: In a fully loaded U-boat, two of the internal reloads were actually stored in the bunks in the crew quarters. Crewmen were happy to expend those first two eels, because that meant a whole heck of a lot more living space and no more sharing a bunk with 600 lbs of Torpex explosive!
