I think this is because the smoke particles are fixed on the top of the funnel. If the ship's listing to port, the funnel goes in the same direction and that's why the smoke makes a little "turn". But the general smoke direction is all the time backwards.
I'm not strong at all at repacking dat's and so on, I can only make some small changes in .cfg's, so I can't solve this problem myself. But perhaps if someone could "separate" the smoke from the ship's physics it would be at least possible to make random smoke direction settings via sh3 commander, like thermolayers or malfunction mod? Even though it wouldn't be a perfect solution it would be better than the "vanilla smoke".
