But why even bother to have different types if they are all the same? They don't all look the same, so they must use different config files.
Ok, filewise (excluding type II's) you have this:

7b
7c
9b
9c
9D2

Then you have what the game assigns to these files.

7b = 7b
7c = 7c, 7c/41, 7c/42
9b = 9b
9c = 9c , 9c/40
92d = 9d2 (its intresting to note that they were going to include the 9d1 but remarked its definitions out)

Generally speaking the sub varients, or rather what they're equiped with and when they become avialable is in the basic.cfg.

The prmary difference between the 7c and 7c42 in SH3 terms is that the 7c42 is set to have three forward external stores, and 1 or 2 radars avialable (one of which is broke). Thats pretty much it. it Uses the 7c files.

If you dont beleive me, look at the basic.cfg file, then the sh3/data/subs directory.

edit: better yet, don't use SH3 commander, just start a game, go to a mission, and see how deep both subs start crushing at. You might find that all 7c subs, start crushing around the same depth
