Mel Gibson is no dumby. As far as I'm concerned, he meant what he said. It's just that it took plenty of alcohol for the truth to slip out. I would say that the only way he has a chance of getting out of this one is to sincerely change his attitude towards jews and explain that to the public in a very convincing way. And he's not done it yet, as far as I'm concerned.
