Dearest Gert,

We are scheduled for a rest after this trip. How I long for the nights in the Alps as we sat by the fire enjoying our wine and fresh apples. Everything is moldy after a few days, even though it is the best that can be had.

The old hares do a good job of tending to the new boys, and our boat is quite well cared for by staff at base. I have recommended five of the men for medals, and Uncle Karl will see they rewarded.

How are your Mother and Father? We've heard of the bombing in Dusseldorf, and my first thoughts were of them. I received a short note from Heinz, as he's being promoted, and will go to Capitains School and then command of his own boat when they dock after this patrol.

We should be done soon, and I will then have a 30 to 40 day leave, as we're supposed to get a new and better boat fresh from the builders, with many new features. I hope they have proper heating in the new boat, as the colder water up north makes the boat very uncomfortable, as you are constantly numb from the lack of heat. I hear the Americans have many luxuries for their crews, and find myself rather envious of them at those times when it's so cold.

I've found a nice bottle of French Champagne dated 1925, and have sent it home for us when I get there. I'll see if I can get those things for you and the children that you requested, but there have been some restrictions on commerce due to shortages, and don't know for sure what will be available.

Tell the children we will soon be a family again, at least for a while. And for you my darling, I wish this wretched war over so we wouldn't have to apart for so long.

Yours truely,

Wilhelm
